He traveled around the world on a naturalists' expedition (1865-1868) and from 1883 became an internationally-known collector of archaeological and ethnographical material, which he also exchanged with experts of the Smithsonian Institution. His huge collection included several hundred artifacts and two thousand archaeological items from North America, and more than a hundred photographs of Native Americans by Hillers, O'Sullivan, and Bell. Chief Plenty Coups
1913.  Photogravure.  Rodman Wannamaker.  Fine condition.
5" x 8"
As a young boy, Chief Plenty Coups, "Bull Who Goes into the Wind," had a vision in which he saw the destruction of the Buffalo herds and the Crow way of life. "To the deeply religious Crow, who understand dreams as agents of spiritual instruction, this vision lent moral weight to a pragmatic course they had been following since the early 1800s. Numbering perhaps 8,000 and surrounded by more powerful, aggressive enemies, the Crow had embraced white fur traders as allies in their persistent conflicts with the Sioux, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. Over the subsequent years, they responded to the Whites' requests for military assistance, helping protect travelers on the Bozeman Trail, scouting for Custer, and fighting with Crook at the Battle of the Rosebud. Chief Plenty Coups was probably one of the most famous of the Crow Chiefs. His name is really a reflection of his high ranking in his tribe. For any brave to advance in status and especially become a Chief they were required to achieve a certain number of "Coups". There is no exact definition of a coup but usually meant to "touch" or discredit the enemy. It could be as minor as sneaking in and out of the enemies camp with an item, or stealing an enemies horse or even killing an enemy in battle. The more the coups one obtained the more the warrior was esteemed by the tribe. And of course "Plenty Coups" was the most recognized as achieving many coups Print ID# 800026   $145.00

Navajo Costume
1845.  Lithograph.  R. H. Kern.  Fine condition.
4.5" x 7.5"
A highly idealized portrait of a four-corners region navajo by one of the great Kern brothers--the first to bring back images of the giant sagaurro, Canyo de Chelly, and other such wonders to the white world of the east coast. From: Wm. Emory's "Notes of a Military Reconnaissance", publishing the enormously important information gathered on the Kearny expedition. The Kern Brotbers--Of the four Philadelphia-born brothers, all artists and three of whom sketched and collected in the West, Richard H. (1821-1853; ANSP 1847) and Edward M. (1823-1863; ANSP 1847) joined Frémont, the latter as topographer, on these explorations. Naturalists as well, Edward specialized in botany and zoology, Richard in ethnology and archaeology. With Benjamin J. (18181849) they accompanied Frémont's 1848-1849 expedition to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, when a third of the party died in the snows. Benjamin himself died at the hands of Utes in 1849. Edward and Richard continued to serve with a number of western expeditions during the 1850s, until Richard was killed by Utes in 1853 while with the Pacific Railroad Surveys (1853). Edward went as official artist with the Rodgers and Ringgold Expedition (1853). Print ID# 800034   $100.00
